Part 1 Topics covered in Part 1 includude:- Beginning as a book illustrator, including portfolio
- The pros and cons of free lancing
- A bit about royalty vs. flat fee projects.
- Illustration challenge will be given: like ones at the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators annual conference.
Part 2 Hands-on process of creating a portfolio art piece for a children’s picture book story as you would for an Art Director. The challenge is to interpret a short given text for a specific age group. This is appropriate for beginning or advanced students. Have fun expressing the child within you in a way that could eventually earn you a living.
Using the sample text and your own art materials, or those provided, you will do sketches, then work on a finished piece of artwork - based on the challenge - which you can include in your children’s book illustration portfolio. You may want to try a new medium or style, appropriate for the age group, or adapt your current style. Portfolio pieces for narrative art include characters in a scene.
